Having your surgery at South Tyneside Hospital
 
You are now booked for your surgery –  pending your pre- assessment. (If you are having a local anaesthetic a  pre-assessment should not be needed)
You will be required to attend a pre-assessment appointment at Sunderland Royal Hospital, either at the Orthopaedic pre-assessment or the spinal assessment unit depending on what surgery is booked .  You will receive your admission letter and pre-assessment letter within two weeks.  This will give you an opportunity to speak to the pre-assessment nurse/spinal assessment nurse to discuss any concerns you may have with your pending surgery.  They will be more then happy to discuss this with you so don’t be afraid to ask.

Car Parking:
Car parking is available on site in pay and display car parks.
 
Day of Surgery:
On the day of surgery you need to arrive at the main entrance at South Tyneside Hospital and take directions to the Short Stay Ward, which is situated on the ground floor of the Ingham Wing.  Once you arrive at the ward you will be met by the nursing staff who will then take you to your bed.  You will then be greeted by the Anaesthetist and the Consultant prior to your surgery. Visitors may stay with you up until this point.
 
If you are a day case you will discharged on the day of surgery so make sure you have someone to collect and look after you when you leave the hospital. 
 
If you are an in-patient the following visiting times will apply. 
 
Visiting Times at the Short Stay Ward:
Monday – Sunday 2pm & 4pm - 7pm - 8pm (Unless otherwise stated by nursing staff)

After Care:
If you require any assistance with regard to any follow-up appointments, physiotherapy or any other problems that you may have following your surgery, please contact you surgeon’s secretary at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Tel 0191 5656256
